Heartbreak in the NFL: Former Dallas Cowboys Punter Kasey Redfern Passes Away at 35

The NFL community is mourning a heartbreaking loss. Former Dallas Cowboys punter Kasey Redfern has tragically passed away at the age of 35 following a courageous, three-and-a-half-year battle with brain cancer and central nervous system lymphoma.

Redfern, who spent time across seven NFL organizations—including the Cowboys during the 2019 offseason—died on Tuesday, October 13, surrounded by his family. His wife, Lauryl, routinely shared updates on his battle, inspiring thousands as he fought the aggressive disease with faith and resilience.

A Story of Relentless Grit

Undrafted out of Wofford College in 2014, Redfern built a reputation across the league for his tireless work ethic and determination. He spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, San Diego Chargers, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys, and Atlanta Falcons.

Despite facing long odds as a journeyman specialist, Redfern’s perseverance earned him regular-season appearances and deep respect from teammates across every locker room he entered:

• Cowboys Stint: Redfern signed with Dallas in April 2019, competing through training camp and preseason action at AT&T Stadium.
• Courageous Journey: After his initial diagnosis in 2023, Redfern endured extensive chemotherapy treatments while remaining a dedicated father and husband.

Outpouring of Love and Tributes

Tributes have poured in from former teammates, coaches, and fans celebrating Redfern’s character off the field. Loved ones remembered him not just as a gifted athlete, but as a devoted husband and father whose positivity left a lasting imprint on everyone he met.

The entire NFL community extends its deepest condolences to the Redfern family during this incredibly difficult time.
