🚨 BREAKING: Former UNC coach Hubert Davis delivers a key message to first-year head coach Michael Malone after joining TNT Sports as a college basketball studio and game analyst, saying…
As the college basketball season draws near, former North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis has stepped into his new role behind the desk, offering some direct, unfiltered advice to his successor. Following his transition to TNT Sports as a college basketball studio and game analyst, Davis made his broadcast presence felt on Wednesday by addressing UNC’s first-year head coach, Michael Malone, directly after the Tar Heels’ final preseason outing.
Despite North Carolina closing out its exhibition slate with a victory over Charlotte, Davis made it clear during TNT’s college basketball preview segment that the performance left much to be desired.
“Let’s be honest about what we just saw: that final preseason win over Charlotte was not a good one,” Davis stated during the broadcast. “When you’re leading a program with this kind of tradition and high expectations, you can’t just look at the final score and be satisfied. Michael has a lot of talent on that roster, but winning ugly in late October against a team you should control isn’t the benchmark.”
Davis, who spent three seasons at the helm in Chapel Hill before making the jump to broadcasting this fall, emphasized that the clock is ticking rapidly toward the official opening night. With North Carolina set to open its regular season on November 2, the newly minted analyst urged Malone to focus on structural discipline and team identity over the next few days.
“Michael needs to build his team properly before that first season game on November 2,” Davis emphasized. “Preseason games are meant to expose your flaws so you can fix them. Right now, the defensive rotation isn’t where it needs to be, and the offensive flow looked stagnant for long stretches against Charlotte’s zone. You cannot afford those habits when the games actually start counting next week.”
Malone, who was hired earlier this year to usher in a new era for Tar Heel basketball, now faces the immediate challenge of tightening up operational execution. The exhibition victory against Charlotte revealed lingering chemistry issues in the backcourt and noticeable miscommunications on defensive switches—areas Davis highlighted as immediate priority fixes.
While Davis’s comments were sharp, they came from a place of familiarity rather than harsh criticism. Speaking as someone who understands the immense pressure of sitting in the head coach’s chair at Chapel Hill, Davis noted that early-season hurdles are natural, provided they are addressed immediately.
“I know Michael, and I know how hard he works,” Davis added. “He’s a basketball mind who knows what winning looks like. But at UNC, the standard is instant. These remaining practice days before November 2 are critical. It’s not about tweaking strategy anymore; it’s about establishing the culture and standard of accountability that will carry this team through ACC play.”
With the regular season opener just days away, all eyes will be on Malone and the Tar Heels on November 2 to see how the team responds to the former coach’s timely advice.
