Clint Gutherson Ready to Build Legacy at Dragons: “I Want to Win”
Clint Gutherson, the experienced NRL veteran and former Parramatta Eels captain, has officially joined St George Illawarra Dragons, bringing over 200 games of NRL experience, 100 tries, and a wealth of leadership to the club. At 30 years old and now enjoying life as a father, Gutherson is eager to begin the next chapter of his career and craft a legacy in the Red V.
Gutherson’s decision to join the Dragons is driven by his desire to be part of a club with a rich history while also having the opportunity to help shape its future. Reflecting on his move, the Northern Beaches product expressed his excitement and pride in putting on the Dragons jersey.
“I feel really excited and honoured to be able to come here and put this jersey on and have that badge on my chest,” Gutherson said. “I can move forward to where I want to go as a player and as a person, and there’s no better club for that than the Dragons. The rich history that this club has is second to none.”
A New Challenge with the Dragons
Gutherson’s journey to the Dragons is not just about a fresh start; it’s also about being part of a club in the midst of rebuilding under head coach Shane Flanagan. The Dragons’ storied past is something Gutherson holds in high regard, but it’s the future direction of the club that excites him most.
“We’ve got a great group of young players,” he said, acknowledging the club’s rising talent. “Flano’s been great. You always want to have a great relationship with the head coach, and the direction that he’s taking this club is what I want to be a part of. I think he’s going to be great for me as a player and as a person.”
Under Flanagan’s guidance, the Dragons are aiming for a return to prominence, and Gutherson sees the opportunity to contribute to that vision. His leadership experience, honed during his long stint as Eels captain, will play a pivotal role in the club’s journey.
Leadership Experience
Gutherson’s leadership credentials are unquestionable, having captained the Eels for several seasons, guiding them to NRL finals and a memorable Grand Final appearance in 2021. He believes that his experiences as a captain will be invaluable at the Dragons, especially in helping young players develop and instilling a culture of success.
“I’m just looking forward to helping the club improve,” Gutherson said. “I was fortunate enough to be captain for a long time over there at the Eels, and I learnt a lot. You can never stop learning with leadership. That’s what I’m going to bring to this team and to this club – everything I’ve learnt. I just want to get better and better.”
Gutherson’s humility and desire to continue evolving as both a player and leader reflect his commitment to the Dragons’ cause. His addition to the squad not only brings experience but also a hunger for success. He has made it clear that his goal is to help the Dragons return to the top and to create a legacy that will be remembered by the fans.
Looking Ahead
Gutherson’s determination to win, combined with his leadership skills and experience, makes him a key acquisition for the Dragons as they aim to rise up the NRL ranks. With a blend of youth and seasoned talent, the club is entering a new era, and Gutherson is ready to play his part.
As he embarks on this new chapter of his career, Clint Gutherson’s focus is firmly on achieving success with the Dragons and leaving his mark on the club’s storied history. For him, it’s all about winning, improving, and continuing to grow both as a player and as a leader. The next phase of his journey has begun, and it’s one that promises to be filled with ambition and hope for the future of the Red V.
