Should a trade-up occur, the Minnesota Vikings will retain the 23rd pick

The Vikings are reportedly attempting to “preserve” the 23rd overall pick they acquired from the Houston Texans in a pre-draft trade a few weeks prior, according to ESPN NFL source Jeremy Fowler.

Minnesota also has two first-round picks at its disposal. This is the group that may be in action. According to other clubs I’ve spoken with, Minnesota doesn’t want to give up their second first-round pick—which is in the 20s—at least not just yet. They may find it difficult to get a quarterback into the top five, but they want to attempt to hold onto that. It appears that they are considering McCarthy, one of the quarterbacks, but they may not want to make the necessary sacrifices to get there.

Sincerely, I don’t know how far Minnesota can advance with just choice #11 and a few other selections. They already lack their second-round draft choice for this year, their third-round pick for next year, and their fourth-round pick for this year.

However, it might greatly help in that endeavor if the rumors of a possible selection trade between the Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons for Kirk Cousins really actually true. It would be slightly less expensive to trade up from #8 (where the Falcons are now) to #4 than it would be to move up from #11 to #4. Additionally, a team like the Arizona Cardinals or the Los Angeles Chargers would probably be much more open to drafting at number eight since it would still allow them to pursue one of the top talents at a different position. For Arizona, that would be wide receiver, and for Los Angeles, it would be offensive line.

It goes without saying that the Vikings front office is far better informed than we are about what other clubs may be considering doing in this year’s draft. Maybe the group believes that J.J. McCarthy will finish at number 11. Perhaps they want to use #23 to support another position and have someone else, like Michael Penix Jr., at #11.

We’ll be providing you with all the gossip, hearsay, speculation, and innuendo until the Detroit draft on April 25th begins. This is looking to be one of the most intriguing and thrilling drafts in this team’s recent history.
