Séamus Clarke wins silver at the European U-18 Championships 5000m race walk

Séamus Clarke, an athlete from Moy Valley, broke his own Irish U-18 record in the 5000m race walk, taking home the silver medal at the European U-18 Championships in Banska Bystrica with a timing of 21:05.70.

Clarke said, “It means so much.” “The pace was very fast, with me taking the lead once or twice.” For the first three and the last two kilometers, I felt comfortable, but the pain was among the worst I’ve ever experienced. But with the podium in mind, it was all just willpower.

On the way there, the 17-year-old said thanks to the Mayo local community and his home club. “When I first started race walking, I might have gotten some strange looks from people, but now that they know who I am and what I’m doing, it gives me more confidence,” he remarked. “It has been a huge help,”
