Remy Gardner Suffers Severe Injuries in MX Crash, Out for Jerez GP
In a significant setback for Tech3 Racing, Moto2 rider Remy Gardner has been sidelined due to a serious motocross accident. The young Australian, who has been making waves in the Moto2 championship this season, broke both legs and an ankle while training in Spain. The unfortunate news comes as a major blow to both Gardner and the Tech3 team, who were looking forward to a strong performance from him at the upcoming Jerez MotoGP round.
The news of Gardner’s injuries was confirmed by Tech3 team principal Hervé Poncharal, who expressed disappointment over the incident. “It’s very disappointing news that we received today from Wayne Gardner informing us that Remy apparently broke his two legs and one ankle, which means, of course, he won’t be in Jerez,” Poncharal stated. The severity of the injuries necessitated immediate medical attention, and Gardner has been transferred to the Dexeus Clinic in Barcelona, where he is under the care of renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mir.
The timing of the accident is particularly unfortunate given Gardner’s promising start to the 2018 Moto2 season. The Australian rider had shown impressive form with a strong performance in Qatar, followed by an even better race in Argentina. While his results in Texas were less spectacular, Gardner had been holding a respectable position in the championship standings. The upcoming Jerez round was expected to be a significant opportunity for him to build on his early success, making his absence all the more regrettable.
Poncharal acknowledged the impact of Gardner’s injury on the team’s plans. “It looks like he could be out for a few weeks, so clearly, he won’t be able to race this weekend,” he said. “It’s a big shame because Remy was having the best start of his young career in Moto2, and we were looking forward to a good performance in Jerez.” He also noted that such accidents are not uncommon in MotoGP, where riders often face injuries during training. “Every year, race by race, MotoGP Championship riders are getting injured while training. It’s a shame, but this is life,” Poncharal added.
In light of Gardner’s injury, Tech3 Racing has announced that Hector Garzo will step in as his replacement for the Jerez GP. Garzo, who has previously competed in the CEV Moto2 Championship and has experience with the Tech3 team, was chosen for this critical role. He had previously replaced Xavi Vierge at the Sachsenring last year, showcasing his ability to adapt quickly to the Moto2 World Championship. “We are proud to announce that Hector Garzo will be back in the Tech3 Racing team, this time replacing Remy Gardner,” Poncharal said. “We hope he will be as impressive as he was for his first outing in the Moto2 World Championship.”
Poncharal emphasized the team’s commitment to supporting Garzo during this challenging time. “We will do everything we can to make him feel comfortable without too much pressure. He knows Jerez, he’s from Spain, and hopefully, he can make us forget the disappointment of Remy’s absence,” he concluded.
As Gardner begins his recovery, the focus now shifts to Garzo and the team’s preparation for the Jerez GP. The Moto2 season continues to be a demanding one, and Tech3 Racing will be keen to make the most of the situation while wishing Gardner a swift and full recovery.
