Rangers and Celtic are “battling” for a Premiership star comeback

The Scottish Premiership title race could definitely be significantly impacted by the upcoming January transfer window. With 35 points from 13 games, Celtic currently lead the division and have an eight-point advantage over Rangers, who have played one fewer game.

The Dutch striker Kevin van Veen, who is supposedly considering a return to the UK barely six months after leaving Motherwell, is rumored to be on the radar of both teams, who are both looking for a striker to propel them to the championship.

The 32-year-old became well-known in the Dutch football fourth division with JVC Cuijk after scoring 20 goals in 29 games during the 2013–14 season. He had more success in the second division with FC Oss, scoring 16 goals in just 20 games.

Van Veen has spent most of his football career in the United Kingdom since 2014. He spent two solid seasons at Scunthorpe and two seasons at Northampton Town.

After moving to Motherwell in 2021, the Dutch forward—who had been named Scunthorpe’s Player of the Season in 2020—reached even greater heights.

Before establishing himself as one of the division’s top goal scorers last season with 25 goals from 38 appearances, Van Veen had a solid first season with Motherwell, scoring nine goals in 32 games. This earned him a spot in the Scottish Premiership Team of the Season and a nomination for Player of the Season.

The 6ft1 striker declared Rangers were interested in his services at the time, but he ultimately sealed a £500,000 summer move back to Holland to join FC Groningen.

With only five goals in 13 games, the seasoned attacker has failed to reach the same level in his native country. Now, he has shockingly stated that he would welcome a return to Scotland for family reasons.

The move back home hasn’t gone as planned, Van Veen said to the Scottish Sun. My partner is having our first child in a few weeks, and I’m finding it harder and harder to handle this.

“Given our personal circumstances, I knew going to Groningen would be challenging, but it’s been far more difficult than I anticipated. Last week, I went back to Scotland before going back to Holland. Then, I realized that I could have to hold our child for a little while before giving them back and leaving them behind the next time I made the trip. That struck me quite deeply. I think it will be hard to achieve that because family is very important to me.

Since I had a good experience at Motherwell, of course I would pay attention to her. However, my agent told me last season that the Rangers were definitely interested in me, even if I might not match their profile given my age. Scotland brought me a lot of joy, and I wouldn’t rule out experiencing more.

The Celtic Star continues by saying that Brendan Rodgers is closely monitoring the player’s circumstances in an effort to give his frontline more experience and more choices to help the team win on all fronts.
