Paul Posluszny, a former standout linebacker for Penn State, has been appointed as the team’s new linebackers coach, returning to Happy Valley to continue the legacy of “Linebacker U.” This appointment marks a significant chapter in Posluszny’s journey, transitioning from a celebrated player to a mentor shaping the future of Penn State’s defense.
During his collegiate career from 2003 to 2006, Posluszny established himself as one of the most formidable linebackers in college football. He earned consensus All-American honors in 2005 and 2006 and became the first player in school history to lead the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons. His accolades include winning the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defensive player in both 2005 and 2006, and the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker in 2005. Posluszny concluded his college career with 372 tackles, setting a then-record for the Nittany Lions. ([National Football Foundation][1], [SI][2], [Onward State][3])
Following his time at Penn State, Posluszny was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He later played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2013 after leading the NFL with 122 solo tackles. Over his 11-season NFL career, Posluszny accumulated over 1,200 tackles and 15 interceptions. ([SI][2], [Onward State][3])
In 2024, Posluszny was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, becoming the 27th Nittany Lion to receive this honor. His induction was celebrated as a testament to his exemplary performance on the field and his embodiment of the values upheld by Penn State football. ([WGAL][4], [SI][2])
Now, as linebackers coach, Posluszny is poised to impart his extensive knowledge and experience to the next generation of Nittany Lions. His return to Penn State is seen as a strategic move to reinforce the program’s storied tradition of producing elite linebackers and to continue the legacy of excellence that defines “Linebacker U.” With his leadership, the future of Penn State’s defense looks promising, as he aims to inspire and develop players who will uphold the esteemed reputation of the program.
