Newcastle United defeats Girona handily to begin the Sela Weekender

Newcastle United opened the Sela Weekender with a 4-0 thumping of Girona, a team that would compete in the Champions League the next season.

With two goals from Sean Longstaff and one each from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon, the Magpies scored all of their goals in a fast-paced first half.

With just one week until the Premier League season begins, Eddie Howe will split his team between the match against Brest tomorrow and tonight.

A few minutes later, Newcastle was up 3-0, and they were still in complete control. Gordon was sent sprinting away by Isak, and the England winger made no mistake as he tucked a low finish past Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga on Wednesday, his first training session back after his involvement at the Euros.

After Alejandro Frances took him down, Isak had an opportunity to score a fourth goal from the penalty spot, but Gazzaniga stopped it.

But Newcastle didn’t let up and scored a fourth goal just seven minutes before halftime. Gazzaniga forced another save from Isak, but Murphy kept the ball alive as Longstaff poked it in from close range.

Gordon was replaced by youngster Trevan Sanusi at halftime, who also assisted Ben Parkinson, another replacement, in setting up a save by Gazzaniga.

In front of over 30,000 spectators, Newcastle saw out their victory when John Ruddy made his Newcastle debut off the bench in the latter minutes.

Newcastle: Murphy, Isak (Hernes 89), Gordon (Sanusi 46); J Miley (Parkinson 63), Longstaff, Joelinton; Livramento, Krafth, Burn (Stanton 89), Hall; Pope (Ruddy 76).
