After suffering a nerve injury to his pitching arm during spring training, ace Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees is still a long awaited return.
Cole’s injury could have been much worse, ending in a season-ending injury that would have left the Yankees shorthanded in the starting rotation. Nevertheless, he is expected to miss at least the next six weeks.
Thankfully, Cole discovered the problem and prevented any long-term effects; a return date of early June is anticipated. The Yankees, who have remained among the best teams in the league, will try to bounce back on Tuesday night after falling to the Toronto Blue Jays in the opening game of a three-game series on Monday.
There has been an increase in volume and distance in the most recent rehab update. He threw from 60 feet on Sunday, and on Tuesday, he is predicted to throw from roughly 75 feet. Cole is said to be feeling good thus far, so the trick will be to turn up the volume and eventually the velocity.
Boone predicted that he will reach heights of up to 75 feet this week. “He’ll continue throwing this week and upping the — he’s upped the volume a little bit already,” Boone said.
With a 2.63 ERA, 3.16 FIP, 9.56 strikeouts per nine, 80.4% left on base, and 39.6% ground ball rate over 209 innings, Cole is coming off an AL CY Young award-winning season in 2023. He pitched over 200 innings for the second straight season, demonstrating remarkable resilience and fatigue management.
The Yankees need Cole to stay healthy and find his groove because they want to win the World Series.
Cole’s impact is simply irreplaceable, but the Yankees have leaned heavily on some of their deeper options, like Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt, to help offset his absence in the interim.
Carlos Rodon will have the Yankees’ backing when he takes the mound against Toronto on Tuesday night. He has a 1.72 ERA through 15.2 innings this season, which is a good start to the game. He’ll try to build on his early success and take back the position of one of the team’s best players.
