Laura Frličková wins Slovakia’s first ever gold medal at the European Athletics U18 Championships

Expectations were quite high for Laura Frličková to win Slovakia’s first-ever gold medal at the European Athletics U18 Championships after her outstanding 12.86 European U18 best the day before.

And on Friday, 19th, in the women’s 100m hurdles final at Banska Bystrica, she duly delivered with another thrilling display. In 12.97 (+0.2m/s), the Slovak scored another brilliant run to win. She had ran under 13 seconds twice before, the first being during her captivating run in the heats the day before.

Leading the World U18 team going into the competition, Frličková’s flawless sprint hurdling performance only served to further solidify her reputation. Daryl Ndasi of Germany attempted to challenge the scorching Slovak, but was unable at the penultimate hurdle, allowing Zofia Rojek of Poland to win silver with a score of 13.33. Auxane Kingue of France won bronze with a personal best time of 13.37.

“These championships could not have gone better,” declared the victorious victor.

“For many athletes, it is their goal to triumph on home soil. I’m really happy that I was able to realize my goal and realize my dream. It’s even better since I’m ecstatic for Petra Kusa, who just won bronze in the race walk. She is not only my roommate but also my teammate and classmate. On the trainings, we see each other every day.

How are the two medal winners going to toast their medals? Frlickova declared, “We are not going to bed early tonight.” “We will celebrate.”
