Kate Garraway breaks down in tears as she admits it’s ‘horrific’ watching Derek doc knowing he’ll die

Kate Garraway broke down in tears on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain as she spoke about upcoming documentary Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story following her husband’s death aged 56

Kate Garraway broke down in tears on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain as she opened up about the final year of her husband Derek Draper’s life.

It comes as the presenter, 56, admitted the £16,000 monthly cost of her husband Derek Draper’s care was more than her salary from ITV and caused her to rack up huge debts. Kate sadly announced that her husband had died at the age of 56 in January, after a lengthy battle with the long-term effects of Covid.

The final year of his life is documented in a new documentary that airs on ITV on Tuesday night, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, in which Draper speaks on camera for the first time, saying: “I want you to hear my story […] I want to be heard.”

During Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, Kate got emotional and admitted it was “horrific” watching back the documentary knowing that Derek will die, especially as Derek airs his agony and frustration over his predicament in the programme.

Kate said: “It’s horrific, actually, obviously it’s very hard to watch now because you just want to climb into the screen and say: ‘Just stop because in a matter of months, your life is going to be taken from you because of the damage of Covid.’

“But of course he wanted to continue and you have to fight on. You have to fight on and progress because that was the purpose. One of the biggest frustrations was that he felt a complete loss of purpose and he felt like a total failure.”

The presenter later got emotional as she fought back tears, saying: “It’s difficult because I try to remove my personal grief because I think this is a really important thing that we have to tackle [raising awareness of care system].”

In the documentary which airs on Tuesday night, Kate says: “Derek’s care costs more than my salary from ITV and that is before you pay for a mortgage, before you pay any household bills, before you pay for anything for the kids, so we are at a crunch point.
