JUST IN:Reece Walsh’s contract negotiations could result in a massive upgrade

Star fullback Reece Walsh is still one of the biggest free agents as a result, contract negotiations between the Broncos and Walsh have reportedly been postponed.
Reece Walsh, a standout fullback who is expected to be one of the major free agents in 2019, is apparently not talking to the Brisbane Broncos about a contract extension.

News Corp. reports surfaced at the end of March indicating that Walsh had reached an agreement to sign a new contract with the team worth $5.5 million spread over five seasons.

The great fullback, though, hasn’t signed the contract yet. In fact, he admitted as much on social media at the moment.

The Broncos are now planning to pay him up to $7 million over five seasons, reported The Daily Telegraph. This would be a $1.5 million rise. He is one of the most marketable stars in the NRL and a crucial retention priority for the Red Hill team.

With an estimated yearly salary of $1.4 million, he would be paid similarly to Nathan Cleary of the Penrith Panthers and Kalyn Ponga of the Newcastle Knights.

Since he will be free to negotiate with rival clubs starting on November 1 and is expected to attract the interest of all 16 rival NRL teams, it is thought that the delay has caused some concern among club executives.

Broncos Chief Executive Dave Donaghy told the newspaper, “We’re doing everything we can to retain Reece.”

Given that Walsh has decided to resign, the Broncos will probably have some difficult decisions to make about the rest of their squad, particularly with regard to centers Kotoni Staggs and Selwyn Cobbo, who have both been connected to other teams.

While some of the pressure has been relieved, Herbie Farnworth (The Dolphins), Thomas Flegler (The Dolphins), Keenan Palasia (Gold Coast Titans), and Kurt Capewell (New Zealand Warriors) all left during the off-season.
