JUST IN:Kirby Smart becomes the highest-paid coach in college football

Kirby Smart of Georgia is now the highest-paid college football coach after receiving a new contract extension.

Multiple reports state that Smart’s new contract, which extends through the 2033 season, will increase his annual pay to $13 million. In the battle for college football salaries, he eclipses Dabo Swinney of Clemson ($11 million).

After eight seasons at his alma mater, the 48-year-old Smart is 94-16, with national titles following the 2021 and 2022 campaigns. After defeating Alabama in the SEC title game and overwhelming Florida State 63-3 in the Orange Bowl, the Bulldogs finished 13-1 in the previous season.

Before assuming leadership at Georgia in 2016, Smart served as Alabama’s defensive coordinator from 2008 to 2015. He was a key player in Alabama’s four national titles under Nick Saban.

Georgia’s 2024 campaign gets underway on August 31 in Atlanta against Clemson.
