Mark Pope stated that his objective as head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats was to continue to use the transfer portal to bring in the finest high school players in the nation.
Pope also values keeping the top talent in the state close to home, in Lexington.
Currently regarded as the No. 10 overall prospect in the class, Lexington native and 2025 combo guard Jasper Johnson fits both descriptions.
Johnson discussed his connection with Pope, who has given Johnson top priority since entering the position, in an interview with Kentucky Sports Radio.
“Having a head coach who truly believes in me and believes I can make an impact on his team right away means a lot,” Johnson remarked. “He’s chasing portal kids, but you need to combine (young) potential with tenacity and experience to win at the next level. That he believes in me and trusts me is incredibly positive.
Pope has the understanding of what it takes to wear the Kentucky uniform and be a member of the best collegiate basketball program ever. Pope, the 1996 National Champion, understands the significance of victory for the BBN.
Johnson remarked, “There’s always pride playing with Kentucky being from there.” “Everyone gives them their best effort. He has big expectations going into his first season, but they have a strong squad, so I’ll be curious to watch what they perform. He used to play there and was in my shoes. They’ll have a successful season this year despite the differences with the SEC, knowing that he is an expert in the game and that he has faith in his players.
Regarding his recruiting, Johnson is still totally open to offers, and he knows that it benefits both parties for coaches to watch him play.
To date, his games have drawn fans from Kentucky, Baylor, Arkansas, North Carolina, Louisville, Auburn, Florida State, and Ohio State.
While it will be intriguing to watch how this recruiting process unfolds, Johnson is without a doubt Pope’s top target for the 2025 class.
