Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner, the top seeds for both men and women in tennis, advanced in the 2024 US Open on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old Polish star Swiatek defeated Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) to earn a spot in the women’s second round of the US Open in New York City.
In the following match, Swiatek will take on Ena Shibahara of Japan.
The top-seeded male individual in the world, Sinner of Italy, defeated Mackenzie McDonald of the United States in four sets to secure his spot in the second round.
After winning the match in sets of 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, and 6-2, Sinner, 23, advanced to face Alex Michelsen, another American national, in the following round.
The US Open, one of the four major tennis tournaments, got underway on Monday and will go for over two weeks, with the men’s singles final scheduled for September 8.
