Deshaun Watson, the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, had surgery to repair a fractured throwing shoulder in November of the previous year, which ended his season. Watson sustained a displaced fracture to his right shoulder’s glenoid, according to an MRI. Watson required emergency surgery, the team’s doctors concluded, in order to prevent more structural damage.
The Browns quarterback is now saying that his recovery is going well, according to Jeff Schudel of the News Herald.
Watson stated, “The situation is good.” We’re in a perfect location, just where we should be. Though everything is moving along quite smoothly, we still have plenty of time to intensify the throwing sessions and other activities.
“We’re in a good place as long as I’m feeling well and the doctors, physical therapists, and everyone are in agreement.”
I hope Watson’s recovery proceeds without any problems and as planned.
The 28-year-old has had trouble staying healthy during his two seasons with the Browns, following a bright beginning to his career with the Houston Texans.
After being moved in the offseason, he signed a five-year, $230 million agreement with Cleveland following an outstanding 2020–21 season with Houston. In 16 games, Watson amassed a career-high 4,823 passing yards and 33 touchdowns.
Sadly, after moving to Cleveland, he hasn’t been able to duplicate the same production. He has six games with the Browns in 2022–2023 and threw for 1,102 yards and seven touchdowns. Before getting hurt, he had 1,115 yards and six touchdowns in the 2023–2024 season.
The former quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, Jameis Winston, was added by the Browns as insurance in case Watson is injured again or is not ready for the season to begin. Although Winston is among the NFL’s best backup quarterbacks, Cleveland is depending on Watson to live up to their expectations after making the move for him.
He won’t be left on his own. During the 2024 NFL free agency period, the former Denver Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy was also signed by the Browns.
He demonstrated to all in 2022–2023 why he was a highly anticipated WR prospect by amassing a career-high 972 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games.
However, Jeudy’s final season was insufficient to persuade the Broncos to hold onto him. He had a 2023–24 season that ended with 758 yards and two touchdowns.
Speaking to the media during the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Florida, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed cautious optimism, according to Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal. When Stefanski looked back on Watson’s career, he emphasized the importance of his availability more than the quarterback’s shown skill.
I’ve seen it from him in the plays he’s written for us over the years. Thus, it goes without saying that maintaining his health and availability on the field is crucial. He also desires that. Because he is so driven, he is putting his all into his rehabilitation so he can leave as soon as possible.
Stefanski narrated how Watson’s performance in a Week 10 game against the Baltimore Ravens was one such instance. Despite suffering from a strained glenoid in his shoulder and a high ankle sprain, Watson completed 14 of 14 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown in the second half.
Stefanski remarked, “I’ve seen it from Deshaun, we’ve seen it from Deshaun.” It’s not necessary to look too far or too far in the past. Examine that second half against the Baltimore team. Given what he can do with a bad ankle and a weak shoulder, that really is as brave a performance as they come.
On June 11, Browns’ required minicamp will begin.
