Charles Lee was hired by the Charlotte Hornets as their new head coach in the hopes that he would help the NBA team, which has been struggling for a while.
After serving as the Boston Celtics’ top assistant coach, Lee, 39, has joined the Hornets. Before committing to the Hornets full-time, Lee will play out his postseason run with the Celtics. Lee worked with Mike Budenholzer for five seasons before to signing a summer contract with the Celtics.
A person with knowledge of the negotiations claims that Lee signed a four-year contract with the Hornets.
The individual talked with The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity because the terms of the agreement were kept confidential.
Lee takes over for Steve Clifford, who stated before the regular season ended that he was leaving his position as Hornets coach following two seasons in his second spell with the team. With a 21-61 record in season, the Hornets shared the third-worst record in the league with the Portland Trail Blazers.
“The Hornets have a talented young core of players and I’m excited about our future and what we can build here,” Lee commented. “There are few places as passionate about basketball as the Carolinas, and I look forward to coming to Charlotte and getting to work.”
Regarded in NBA circles as a possible rising star in the coaching ranks, Lee enjoys high regard.
As an associate head coach, he guided the Milwaukee Bucks to the NBA title in 2020–21. In his ten NBA seasons, Lee’s teams have amassed a regular-season record of 510-291 (.637), nine postseason appearances, seven division championships, and five No. 1 seeds in the Eastern Conference.
Lee has assisted in coaching teams that have concluded the NBA regular season with the best record in four of the last six seasons.
