The Cincinnati Bengals are anticipated to select a new wide receiver in a few weeks, since Tee Higgins may go in 2025 if he isn’t traded before then.
However, the class is large, so the Bengals might decide against selecting a rookie wide receiver at No. 18 overall. Paul Dehner Jr., the Cincy beat writer for The Athletic, believes the pick will occur in round two. On April 11, he offered a “prediction” for the new Bengals pass-catcher as part of a thorough analysis of the draft class at this position.
Dehner said, “Take what the draft gives you.” And with the 49th choice in this draft, the Bengals will have excellent receiving options. My greatest option for a receiver landing location is there, and Roman Wilson of Michigan would be a logical choice at that time.
Considering the combination of need and quality at wide receiver, he continued, it would be “stunning if Cincinnati didn’t take a receiver before the fourth round.”
Dehner evaluated each wide receiver in the 2024 class and their suitability for the Bengals earlier in the piece. Ultimately, he concluded that three candidates appeared to have the qualities Cincinnati will be seeking on selection weekend.
Wilson belonged to that trio.
“It was difficult not to think about how [Joe] Burrow creates so many big plays and touchdowns in exactly that manner watching Wilson work off-script with J.J. McCarthy for the Wolverines,” Dehner scouted.
The reporter went on, “Wilson has an amazing knack for working to the open spots, creating space, and making the catches.” “At 5-11, 187, he is smaller in stature, similar to [Green Bay Packers] breakout player Jayden Reed, but he dominated the week at the Senior Bowl by showcasing his hands and route running.”
Dehner said, “[Wilson is] more of a pure slot, but it’s easy to see a connection with Burrow.”
You’ll notice that Bengals beat writer anticipates that Cincinnati will replace the seasoned slot specialist in the draft with Tyler Boyd, who is still unsigned in NFL free agency.
