Some figures have been altered or claimed in Austin due to the numerous new players that have joined and the players that have left, whether through the NFL Draft or the transfer portal. Texas was able to bring in a fantastic recruiting and portal class, lead by recently extended head coach Steve Sarkisian, who guided the team to a Big 12 title victory and within one touchdown of moving on to the College Football Playoff. According to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, their transfer portal class was ranked No. 7 in the nation, while their high school class was ranked No. 6 in the nation. Some returning players altered their numbers from the previous season due to the influx of new faces and vacant numbers. Let’s examine a few of the changes in the numbers:
Jahdae Barron, DB Former Number: 23 The new number is 7. Jahdae Barron will wear the coveted No. 7 jersey in honor of Michael Huff, the renowned defensive back who is currently an assistant director of player development.
Cook, Johntay, WR Old Number: 2 Novel Number: 1. Even the formerly highly-touted prospect will change his number after just one season on the 40 acres. Xavier Worthy took the No. 1 this past season, but Cook will wear it like he did in high school now that Worthy is headed to the NFL. Associated content Old Number for DeAndre Moore, WR: 11 The new number is 0. The St. John Bosco freshman was not seen by us, but he will get an opportunity to compete for playing time due to some departures in the receiver group. The No. 0 that Ja’Tavion Sanders wore while he was in Austin will be going to him.
Isaiah Bond, wide receiver Previous Number: 17 (Alabama) The new number is seven. Bond is the best player in their transfer portal class when he arrives in Texas. Instead of wearing No. 17, which is presently worn by running back Savion Red, he will wear No. 7.
TE Amari Niblack Former Number: Alabama’s 84 The new number is eight. Niblack is going to be killing it in Austin, enjoying the single digits after donning No. 84 in Tuscaloosa. Xavier Worthy formerly worn No. 8, but he gave it up for No. 1. Now he wears No. 8. It was worn by Casey Cain, who then transferred to UNLV, after worthy handed up No. 8.
DB Andrew Mukuba No. 13 (Clemson) is the new number, replacing No. 1. During his final season of collegiate football, the Austin native decided to play football closer to home after three successful years at Clemson. Since Justice Finkley had already claimed No. 1, he chose to wear No. 13, which had been worn by Larry Turner-Gooden before he transferred to San Jose State.
Moore, Trey Formerly, 31 (UTSA) 31 is the new number. Moore, one of the most effective pass rushers in the nation, will strive to establish a spot for Texas in a strong squad. The same number he wore in San Antonio will be on him when he does this. Associated content Mitchell, Sydir Former Number: 99 90 is the new number. Next season, Sydir Mitchell will be sporting his high school jersey. Byron Murphy, a predicted first-round pick, wore it last year. Not to mention, Mitchell put on a significant amount of bulk throughout the offseason, weighing in at 372 pounds.
Arizona’s Tiaoalii Savea, DL Old Number No. 98 98 is the new number. Savea is a welcome surprise addition to Texas’ defensive line, adding some additional trench experience to a unit that lost two of the greatest players in the nation. The highest number on the squad right now, the one he wore at Arizona, is the one he will wear.
