On Tuesday, Georgia junior Brock Bowers—who won the esteemed Mackey Award as the top tight end in college football for the second year running—announced his intention to declare for the NFL draft.
Napa, California native Bowers is presently rated as the fifth-best prospect for the 2024 NFL draft by ESPN expert Mel Kiper Jr.; another ESPN analyst, Jordan Reid, has him at eighth.
In an Instagram post thanking “Dawg Nation,” Bowers pondered over his amazing three years at the university. He expressed gratitude for his family’s persistent support, especially for his parents, who traveled across the nation multiple times to support him on his quest.
Three-time All-SEC and All-American selection Bowers had an immediate impact on the Bulldogs starting in 2021 during his rookie season. His outstanding stats, which included 56 receptions for 882 yards and 13 touchdowns, were a major factor in the Bulldogs winning their first national championship in forty-one years.
With 63 receptions for 942 yards and seven scores in his sophomore campaign, Bowers maintained his stellar play and helped the Bulldogs win back-to-back CFP national titles.
Bowers showed fortitude in the face of hardship when he sustained a left ankle injury in October of the previous season that necessitated TightRope surgery. Despite missing three games, he caught 56 passes for 714 yards and six touchdowns. During the season, he was the leader among all FBS tight ends with 494 receiving yards after contact.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 240 pounds, Bowers, unfortunately, faced limitations in the SEC championship game against Alabama and sat out the Capital One Orange Bowl against Florida State due to lingering effects of the ankle injury.
Coach Kirby Smart of Georgia commended Bowers for his remarkable athleticism, toughness, and work ethic, emphasizing his important influence on the team’s mindset and offensive strategy. Smart expressed hope that Bowers’ legacy would continue to have an impact on the team.
Owing to his adaptability, aptitude at blocking, and capacity to perform well after the catch, Bowers is expected to be one of the tight ends chosen most heavily in NFL draft history. Kyle Pitts of Florida was selected by the Atlanta Falcons with the fourth overall choice in the 2021 NFL Draft, setting a record and making him the highest-drafted tight end in NFL history.
