JUST IN: Former Hull City star wins promotion to League One

Despite Pompey’s desire to leave Sky Bet League One, one of their previous players will be returning after receiving a promotion the following season.

After defeating Forest Green Rovers 6-0 to secure their spot, Wrexham will participate in English football for the first time in 19 years in the third division. The Dragons, supported by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney, and boasting a Disney+ documentary, had to defeat FGR, and they did so with convincing ease.

Elliot Lee began the score, and after Ryan Innis’ own goal, Ryan Mullin added a brace. The game ended in a 6-0 thumping victory as Jack Marriott completed the scoring after Ryan Barnett joined in.

Playing 72 minutes in the victory, former Pompey player Andy Cannon is currently celebrating his second promotion. The 28-year-old, who joined Wrexham from Hull City for an undisclosed price, has been a part of the team since December 2022. This season, he has made 33 league appearances for them and netted four goals.

From January 2019 until June 2021, Cannon participated in games for Pompey. After five years at Spotland, he signed a contract with Rochdale for an undisclosed sum. Kenny Jackett saw Cannon as an attacking midfield player and signed him. He made 79 appearances at Fratton Park, tallying three goals and nine assists throughout that time.

In 2021, he was free to depart and joined Hull City. Giving away Blues fans’ worn-out two-match shirts was a good gesture he made as he left Portsmouth. Cannon told The Portsmouth News in June 2021, “I’ve had my ups and downs but, overall, I’ve really enjoyed it,” reflecting on his time at the club.

“Unfortunately, things aren’t as they should be; if they were intended to last longer, they would have.

“I wouldn’t exactly say that I was freed. I told the manager I wanted to go up north to be with my family during our conversation.

“I value our chat and his approach; he was straightforward about it. I believe it was in our best interests together, and I can now return home and feel a little more at ease.

After talking it over, we decided that perhaps now was the right moment for me to return to the north and be nearer to my family.

“That’s the least I could do, and maybe I demonstrated my abilities as a player along the road.

It has been a pleasure for me to devote the last 2.5 years of my life to this club. I want the fans to know that I’ve dedicated myself completely and given it my all.”

Though Portsmouth is on the cusp of returning to the Championship, a reunion between Pompey and Cannon is incredibly unlikely. On Tuesday, a win would earn them the League One championship, while a draw against Barnsley would confirm promotion.
