JUST IN: Cowboys set to sign Calais Campbell

Even if many sports have made the decision to draft younger players during this strange and turbulent offseason for the Dallas Cowboys, there is still value in having some experienced expertise, don’t you think? There is something to be said for the veterans, even though the offensive line has been completely redesigned with possibly two rookie starters and at least one (if not three) rookie or second-year linebacker in the lineup.

And by NFL standards, it doesn’t get much older than Calais Campbell, who, at 37, would be among the league’s ten oldest non-kickers. At least that is assuming Campbell, a free agent, signs with a team for 2024. There might be a shared desire as Campbell is searching for a location to compete for a Super Bowl and the Cowboys are looking for defensive line support.

If the Cowboys are able to wrangle him away from the Falcons, who have the option to re-sign Campbell should he choose to play a 17th season. Nevertheless, Campbell is included as one of the “3 post-draft moves the Dallas Cowboys should make to complete their roster” in an article of the same name on the Cowboys website Blogging the Boys.

The following is what author Brian Martin had to say about Campbell visiting The Star:

Calais Campbell is no longer the player he once was at the age of 37, but he still has enough left in him to support the Cowboys defense. Dallas’ interior defensive line is still woefully deficient, so adding Campbell would be quite beneficial. He would make a fantastic mentor and is still a fantastic run defender.

As one of the all-time great pass rushers, Campbell is sure to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. In addition to being selected for the Pro Bowl six times, he was named the 2017 Sporting News Defensive Player of the Year. His career sack total of 105.5 places him 48th all-time, and he is one of just 64 players in NFL history to have more than 100 sacks.

The New York Jets website Jets Press referred to Campbell as “a future Hall of Famer” in a headline this offseason. Although getting to Canton can occasionally be an odd experience, Campbell’s qualifications are unquestionable.

With Osa Odighizuwa in the center and Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence on the ends, the Cowboys have some quality up front. Mazi Smith, at nose tackle, will have to step up following a disappointing rookie campaign.

However, Dallas needs leadership and depth behind the scenes, and Campbell would be a great addition in both areas.
