JUST IN : ATLANTA UNITED Signs New Defender

Cincinnati native Daniel Russo, a defender, has joined Atlanta United 2. The defender was a member of the Fighting Irish for the previous four seasons. Russo’s contract with the MLS NEXT Pro team expires in 2024, subject to league and federation clearance.

Before moving to South Bend, the Jackson, New Jersey native participated in the New York Red Bulls Academy and played prep ball at Jackson Memorial. Russo had 13 games in his debut season at Notre Dame, five of which were starts, and finished with one goal and one assist. The next season, he made even more progress, participating in 24 games and recording three goals and four assists.

In his junior year of 2022, he scored the most points of his whole collegiate career. Playing in all 17 games, he led the Irish in points (16) and goals scored (6). In a thrilling victory over Michigan, he scored his first career hattrick. Russo played a career-high 1,444 minutes and scored four goals in his last season at Notre Dame. Russo started every game during the team’s run in the NCAA Tournament as Notre Dame made it to the College Cup Final before losing 2-1 to Clemson. Upon leaving Notre Dame, he has 14 goals and 11 assists in his career.
