JUST IN: Alex Cora Acknowledges His Stunning Red Sox Catch

There were some positive aspects for Boston on Monday even if the Red Sox lost their series opener against the Guardians.

Wilyer Abreu contributed one of them when he produced one of the Red Sox’s best defensive plays of the season to far to finish the top half of the first inning at Fenway Park. After José Ramírez tagged a Kutter Crawford slider to deep right field, Abreu rushed back, leaped up, and caught the ball while smashing into the wall, denying the Cleveland star additional bases.

Crawford witnessed his Red Sox buddy flash the leather with a mixture of delight and disbelief. Since Boston’s manager wasn’t present when Abreu made his grab, Alex Cora’s response was much more reserved.

According to MassLive, Cora told reporters, “When Ramírez hits it, I’m looking at Ramírez because it seems like he crushed that one.” “And the fans’ response all of a sudden. I therefore missed it live. I then watched the replay. Well done. Well done.

Prior to the game, Cora made a point of highlighting Abreu and stressing how crucial it is for the Red Sox to give the 24-year-old at-bats against righties. Abreu is expected to be in Boston’s starting lineup for the second game of the four-game series, as right-hander Tanner Bibee is scheduled to start for the Guardians on Tuesday night.
