Prior to Hull City’s thrilling 3-1 victory over Cardiff City last Saturday, which kept the Tigers in touch with the play-off group, Liam Rosenior acknowledged to having doubts about the mindset of his team.
After watching Rosenior’s team watch Norwich City defeat Ipswich Town 1-0 at Carrow Road, the Bluebirds are fierce rivals, so City knew they had to win before facing them. The players warmed up outside the Cardiff City Stadium.
Ultimately, though, the Tigers’ players overcame Cardiff with a commanding 3-0 victory on Saturday, maintaining their hopes in the process. Fabio Carvalho’s incredible brace in the first half helped them win, and Jaden Philogene found his scoring touch against the team he was previously on loan from.
The margin is still six points because of Norwich’s recent strong play, but City still has that game to come at Coventry on Wednesday night, and Rosenior’s team travels to Watford this weekend with the understanding that a win will be necessary to stay in touch with the Canaries, who are hosting Bristol City.
Rosenior clarified, “I think you lose focus if you look too far ahead.” “You must gradually turn your attention to the next game; it is the only way to succeed. I will devote all of my energy to maximizing our performance in the match against Watford.
“The players have demonstrated incredible focus. They’ve been outstanding, so all we need to do is keep our attention on what we can accomplish. It’s not easy, but if you want to perform at a top level, you have to do that.
“Prior to Cardiff, I felt anxious. A few players watched the Norwich match because Norwich was playing Ipswich early, and they wanted to see the result before they had to report to warm up. They handled that so brilliantly that I wasn’t concerned. They performed incredibly well.
“While it used to be natural to receive results from the radio or Grandstand or Teletext, that was not the case in my day. The most crucial thing right now is that they perform, since you can’t stop them from looking at other things when it’s just on your phone.”
Despite losing late at Elland Road, City’s performance against Leeds on Easter Monday offered Rosenior hope. Since returning from their warm-weather training camp in Antalya, the team has won two, lost two, and drawn one.
“What I would say is that, considering our three-week break before that, Stoke was a real kick in the teeth in these last four games,” he stated. Since then, we’ve played incredibly well away against Leeds and have earned more. Although the performances have met my expectations, we are now beginning to reap the rewards of the associated outcome.”
