Cyrus Christie, a defender, expressed his desire to stay at Hull City past the summer and expressed optimism that contract negotiations would result in an agreement.
The seasoned defender’s current Tigers contract expires at the end of the current campaign. He and manager Liam Rosenior have not yet had talks, but the club does have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.
With Scotsman Greg Docherty, Adama Traore, and Aaron Connolly nearing the end of their contracts, Rosenior has previously indicated he felt at ease making such important choices so early in the season.
Christie, though, has expressed publicly for the first time that he wants to stay at the team that he joined in the summer of 2022 after leaving Fulham.
“I’ve made Hull my home,” the 31-year-old declared. We’ll see if it will be my home for much longer as I approach the last year of my contract. Only what I can do on the pitch is within my control. This place feels exactly as Swansea did when I was there. I feel like I’ve clicked with everyone, and it’s been wonderful.
Christie responded, “Yes, we’ll see,” when asked if he would be interested in signing a contract extension with the Championship team. “Those in positions of authority and those who make the decisions make the decisions; I am not involved in that process.
“As I previously stated, I can only act. I wholeheartedly support the goals that this club and the manager have set out. Though I believe I am the third oldest player on the team, I have a lot of experience and have demonstrated a variety of skills.
“I was playing high and wide the previous year. I’m playing center midfield this year in addition to serving as a third center half. Few individuals are observing that. Some people claim that I haven’t had the same impact as I did the previous year, but I had to modify my style of play and adjust to a new role after a significant knee surgery.”
Lewie Coyle, a Coventry native, started every game at right defense this season, so Christie had to be patient. However, Coyle came off the bench to turn the tide against Swansea and set up goals for Tyler Morton and Jaden Philogene.
“I’ve managed to show that with the two assists so I’m playing with a point to prove,” he said. “I want to keep proving that point, continuing working hard in my training, and demonstrate to people that I am capable of returning to the levels I can reach since I feel like people have doubted me since I recovered from my knee injury.
“I believe I still have a lot to accomplish in this game; I just need to keep working hard. I can only look forward since I believe I have a lot to offer this squad. So far, this place has been fantastic for me, and I want to keep going.”
