Hull City boss Liam Rosenior gives his verdict after a 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough

If Hull City is unable to make it back to the Premier League through the play-offs this season, Liam Rosenior, the manager of Hull City, believes Middlesbrough will be among their key rivals for promotion the following season.

Similar to Michael Carrick, Rosenior isn’t giving up on Hull’s attempt to overtake Norwich for sixth place just yet. After an entertaining draw that didn’t really help either team in the Championship play-off race, the two teams are now six points ahead of the Canaries.

Hull’s next game is against another top-six contender Coventry City, so they may have a little more motivation from the outcome. Boro now has four games left and six points to recover, or seven if you include the goal differential, which is plus-10 in Norwich’s favor.

Rosenior stated: “If Michael is around, they will undoubtedly be up there. It’s a process, which is having a way, a procedure, and a board that knows you’re headed in the correct direction and supports you. Michael is an excellent manager. He was excellent tactically in the first ten minutes, working against our man-to-man.

Then, I had to adjust our man-to-man press, which presented a significant tactical difficulty. That performance speaks volumes about both clubs’ current footballing status. However, I thought that given our performance today, we ought to have won the game.

“You witnessed two extremely excellent teams attempting to play football in what I believe to be the proper way. They had periods in transition because both sides were striving to win. Michael deserves credit, but I felt that we were the superior team tonight, and I believe he would agree that in the first game, which we won, they were undoubtedly the superior team.”

Even though the outcome didn’t exactly advance the goals of either side, it was nonetheless an exciting fight. After just four minutes, Emmanuel Latte Lath gave Boro the lead. However, Hull rallied to lead 2-1 at halftime. Then, as both teams fought hard for a victory in the closing fifteen minutes, Boro started the second half strongly and equalized through Finn Azaz.

“It’s the same old story,” Rosenior declared. We play at a level of play, energy, press, and technical ability that I’ve always wanted to see in a team, and I’m incredibly happy of 99% of what we do. However, we just don’t take advantage of those opportunities, which makes us shoot ourselves in the foot.

“It’s a very smart first goal. Middlesbrough knew we would press man-to-man, so they isolated Abdus (Omur) early on. The left back was their best player and managed to get in. It was an amazing performance once we modified and adjusted our press.

Nobody could possibly disagree with it, in my opinion. We had more opportunities and incredible plays than I could have ever imagined. It’s how I’ve always imagined my squad to play. We had total control of the game when they scored.
