Dragons to Celebrate 20th Edition of the i98FM Illawarra Convoy
The St George Illawarra Dragons will join in the celebrations of the 20th edition of the i98FM Illawarra Convoy this Sunday, November 17, as the event rolls into town, marking two decades of community support and fundraising. Known as the largest gathering of trucks and bikes in the Southern Hemisphere, the i98FM Illawarra Convoy is a major highlight on the region’s calendar, drawing thousands of people together to support a cause close to the hearts of many.
Since its inception in 2005, the Convoy has become one of Australia’s most significant regional fundraising events. The funds raised each year go toward supporting individuals and families impacted by life-threatening medical conditions, as well as local hospitals and charities dedicated to assisting those battling severe illnesses. With the community coming together in force every year, the event has raised more than $25 million to date, directly benefiting thousands of families and patients throughout the Illawarra and surrounding areas.
The Dragons, as one of the region’s most prominent sporting institutions, have been strong supporters of the Convoy for many years. In fact, the club’s involvement has played a crucial role in the event’s ongoing success. Through various initiatives, including fundraising efforts tied to the NRL season, the Dragons have raised over $200,000 to help the cause and have gifted memorable experiences to individuals and families who benefit from the funds raised.
Each year, the Dragons host a Convoy-themed round during the NRL Premiership Season, which sees the club team up with key sponsors and partners to support the i98FM Illawarra Convoy. For every person who attends the designated home NRL fixture, the Dragons, along with their partners—including Squadron Energy, TripADeal, Venues NSW, St George Bank, and the NRL—donate $1 towards the Convoy’s fundraising efforts. This year, through their Convoy Round and the combined 50/50 Charity Raffle, the Dragons were able to contribute a total of $50,400 to the Convoy for the Illawarra Community Foundation, further solidifying their commitment to the cause.
Dragons CEO Ryan Webb spoke proudly of the club’s ongoing relationship with the Illawarra Convoy, acknowledging the important role the Dragons play in supporting the local community. “We always take pride in being a role model for our community,” Webb said. “Our club has held Convoy Round for the past six years, designating a home NRL Premiership fixture to raise funds and support the cause.” Webb also expressed his pride in the continued success of the i98FM Illawarra Convoy, particularly as it celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
“We’re pleased to be in support this Sunday at Shellharbour Airport, as we all celebrate the hard work and contributions that have been made over the last 20 years in the Illawarra region,” Webb added. “We look forward to continuing our support for the Convoy ahead of the 2025 NRL Premiership season.”
As the Convoy hits this major milestone, the event will once again bring together a massive collection of trucks, bikes, and community members in a show of solidarity and goodwill. The Dragons, along with their sponsors and partners, will be there in full force, joining in the celebrations and honoring the incredible impact the Convoy has had on the Illawarra region. The partnership between the Dragons and the i98FM Illawarra Convoy continues to be a shining example of the power of sport to make a positive difference in the community.
With the 2024 Convoy event fast approaching, there is a palpable sense of excitement around the Illawarra as the community gears up for what promises to be a memorable and impactful day. The Dragons, as always, remain committed to supporting this vital cause and look forward to many more years of collaboration.
