Rachel Homan’s Canadian curling team remains undefeated at the World Women’s Curling Championship after a pair of wins on Wednesday. Homan, alongside her Ottawa-based team, defeated Japan 7-2 and Turkey 9-5, improving their record to 8-0 and securing a playoff spot. The victories came after Homan’s team ended Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni’s 42-game world championship win streak the previous night.
Against Japan, Homan and her teammates initially struggled to adjust to the ice conditions but eventually broke open a close game with a decisive three-point eighth end. Despite a tough match against Turkey, where Turkey led 4-3 at one point, Homan’s team demonstrated resilience. With crucial shots in the ninth end, Canada scored five points to secure the win, extending their overall win streak to 24 games.
Homan’s squad, which also includes Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes, is navigating a grueling schedule. They are playing back-to-back games on three consecutive days, a rarity compared to their usual tournament format. Miskew noted the challenge of adjusting to this demanding schedule but emphasized the team’s focus on maximizing rest between matches.
Canada’s last world title came in 2018 with Jennifer Jones leading the team. Homan, who won gold in the 2017 World Championship, is aiming to replicate that success in Sydney. The competition continues with Homan’s team facing Estonia and New Zealand in upcoming matches, while the top six teams at the end of the round-robin will advance to the playoffs.
