Michigan Football Officially Announces the Signing of Transfer Quarterback Mickey Keene
The University of Michigan football team officially announced the signing of transfer quarterback Mickey Keene on December 30, 2024. Keene, a former starting quarterback at UCF (University of Central Florida), brings a wealth of experience and versatility to Michigan’s quarterback room. His decision to join the Wolverines represents a key move for the program, as Michigan continues to build a formidable roster for the 2024 season and beyond.
Keene, originally from Tampa, Florida, transferred to Michigan after spending three years with UCF. Throughout his tenure with the Knights, he demonstrated significant leadership and skill, earning a reputation as a strong and reliable quarterback. In his time with UCF, Keene played in a total of 25 games, including a starting role in the 2022 season. He accumulated over 3,000 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, solidifying his status as a capable playmaker in the American Athletic Conference (AAC).
As a dual-threat quarterback, Keene’s ability to read defenses and make plays with his arm and legs made him an attractive addition to Michigan’s offense. During his career at UCF, he showcased a strong deep ball, accuracy under pressure, and impressive mobility, traits that align with Michigan’s offensive style. His time in the AAC, one of the more competitive Group of Five conferences, will also add depth and diversity to Michigan’s quarterback options.
Keene’s decision to transfer to Michigan was influenced by several factors, including the program’s storied football tradition, its emphasis on developing quarterbacks, and the Wolverines’ potential to compete for a national title in 2024. Michigan’s quarterback room, which includes returning starter J.J. McCarthy, was in need of a veteran presence and experienced backup. With McCarthy expected to declare for the NFL Draft after the 2024 season, Keene’s arrival ensures that Michigan will have a strong and capable quarterback on the roster in the event of any injuries or changes during the upcoming season.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed his excitement about adding Keene to the team, noting the quarterback’s maturity, leadership qualities, and familiarity with high-pressure games. “Mickey Keene is a proven winner, and his experience will be invaluable as we move forward into the 2024 season. We’re excited to see how he fits into our offense and look forward to watching him compete with the rest of our quarterbacks,” Harbaugh said in a statement.
Keene also shared his enthusiasm about joining the Michigan football program. “I’m excited to be part of a program with such rich history and a championship-level culture,” Keene said. “The opportunity to learn from Coach Harbaugh and play alongside an incredibly talented group of players is something I couldn’t pass up. I’m ready to contribute to the team and help Michigan continue its success.”
With the addition of Mickey Keene, Michigan strengthens its quarterback depth and solidifies its future prospects under center. His experience and playmaking abilities will be a valuable asset for the Wolverines in the highly competitive Big Ten and beyond, as the team aims to secure its place in the College Football Playoff and chase another national championship.
