With their flawless 1-0 victory over Liverpool, Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace team made Sunday at Anfield a day to remember. They made headlines for a number of reasons.
What a day it was for Crystal Palace, who defeated Liverpool on Sunday afternoon to earn Oliver Glasner’s first Premier League away victory.
It was the first time a team had triumphed at Anfield this season against Jurgen Klopp’s title-challenging team, upending the standings and producing an incredible win for the South Londoners.
It would be impossible to single out one aspect of Palace’s performance that won the game—from their excellent attacking play to their masterful defense—but Eberechi Eze’s goal in the first half stood out as the game’s pivotal moment in deciding the outcome, as it set up the three points.
The Eagles’ victory meant far more than just three points because it made them the first team to defeat Klopp in his tenure at Liverpool, in addition to being the first team to triumph at Anfield this season.
Not only did Palace defeat Liverpool on Merseyside, but they also became the first team to triumph and maintain a clean sheet against the Reds since March 2021.
When Klopp took over as manager of Liverpool on Sunday, the Eagles became the first team to defeat the Reds three times in the Premier League at Anfield. The German will be relieved that he will not be facing Crystal Palace again.
When you take into account that no other team has defeated Klopp at Anfield more than once—Palace has already won there three times—the number becomes even more amazing.
The Eagles’ victories in 2015, 2017 and, now, 2024 have solidified their place in Klopp’s memories at Anfield, giving the Champions League-winning manager more opportunities to win at home than any other Premier League boss.
From a Palace perspective, it was more than simply a victory for the record books, though, as Glasner witnessed his team put in a great deal of effort to make sure their early lead mattered.
Naturally, the Austrian will relish the moment, but he’ll also want to build on the win to make sure his team accomplishes something they haven’t done all season.
Palace’s dismal form this season is evident in the fact that they have yet to secure back-to-back league victories with just six games remaining.
West Ham will be the next opponent at Selhurst Park, providing Glasner with the chance to finally start showing promise with the Eagles.
