A team from British Columbia delivered a gold medal-winning performance at the Canadian Firefighters Curling Association Championship, held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, from March 24 to April 1, 2023. The team, composed of skip Dean Thulin, third Ken Dawson, second Rob Robinson, and lead Kevin Maxwell, along with team director Rick Euper, represented their province proudly, facing off against the top firefighter curlers from across Canada.
Robinson, the fire chief of the Summerland Fire Department, is a veteran of the sport with over 40 years of curling experience and remains active at the Summerland Curling Club. He highlighted the level of competition throughout the week, noting that every match was a challenge, with teams from all provinces competing.
During the round-robin phase of the tournament, the British Columbia team finished with a 7-2 record, dropping two games to Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. However, they bounced back strong, advancing to the semifinals where they faced Alberta. After securing a victory in the semifinal, they took on Southern Ontario again in the finals, this time emerging victorious to claim the national title.
Thulin and Dawson both hail from Campbell River, while Maxwell is based out of CFB Esquimalt, a Canadian Forces base on the Pacific coast. Despite coming from different parts of the province, the team’s chemistry has been a key factor in their success. Robinson commented on how well they gel as a unit, saying, “We just get along as a team really well. We’re all like brothers.”
This isn’t the first time the British Columbia team has claimed gold at the national championship. Robinson and his teammates previously won the championship in Regina in 2010 and have consistently placed well in past tournaments. Their latest victory cements their reputation as one of the top firefighter curling teams in the country.
The championship victory in Charlottetown stands as another highlight in their curling careers, a testament to their skill, teamwork, and dedication to both their sport and their profession as firefighters.
