After Joe Hart’s error against Motherwell yesterday, Celtics’ need to replace him looks much more pressing, and supporters will be wondering who Brendan Rodgers might be considering.
The Celtic manager has emphasized the importance of adding quality players in January, and it appears he has lofty goals in mind given the Daily Record’s report that Rodgers is thinking about making a move for Andriy Lunin of Real Madrid.
Despite a recent run in the team, Andriy Lunin, Real Madrid’s backup goalie, might be available in January, according to the source.
“The Ukrainian goalie, who has spent the majority of the season on the sidelines, filled in for starting keeper Kepa during their past three games.
“Record Sport has learned that he’s one of the keepers Celtic is considering, and although his recent success at Real Madrid may make him difficult to sign, Carlo Ancelotti hinted that his time with the team is likely coming to an end this coming weekend.”
To be sure, Lunin has been connected to a move to Celtic before. In October, TBR Celtic detailed how the Hoops developed an interest in the Ukrainian international.
But after it was revealed that Lunin, 24, would be given to Chelsea as Real Madrid attempted to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga of the Premier League team on a permanent basis, it appeared that a move for Lunin was out of the question.
Now that Lunin has recently forced his way into Madrid’s first team, all of that appears to have stopped.
Lunin, who was brought in from the cold, has started the previous two La Liga games for Galactico, and it appears he did well in the team’s 3-0 victory away to Cadiz and their 5-1 victory at home to Valencia.
What Andriy Lunin stated regarding his prospects as Celtic link go on
Lunin expressed his dissatisfaction with his limited playing time in public. He has only appeared in 22 games for Madrid since his £12 million transfer there in 2018. [Transfermarkt]
“I was thinking about it [leaving Real Madrid] at the end of last season,” Lunin stated [Madrid Xtra]. It’s typical for you to not play.
But since I was a little child, Real Madrid has always been my goal; you don’t really want to leave.
However, you practice playing and always want to play in order to experience the sensations that games evoke. I’m now focusing on my training, so we’ll see.
“Other clubs made offers, but I didn’t talk to them; nothing substantial.”
Joe Hart’s contract is coming to an end, and he will turn 37 the following year, so Celtic will definitely need to find a long-term replacement for the Englishman.
Can Lunin really enter and carry out that task? Given that the goalkeeper’s contract expires in the summer and that he is reportedly paid £57k per week [SalarySport], a deal could not be completely out of the question if Celtic made a significant offer to get him.
Undoubtedly, this one merits careful observation. especially with Hart in the public eye and tomorrow night’s Champions League matchup against Lazio approaching.
