On Wednesday of this week, Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras had surgery to fix the fracture in his forearm. The surgery went as planned, according to manager Oli Marmol, and Contreras will likely miss ten weeks of play. John Denton of MLB.com and Katie Woo of The Athletic on X report that he hopes to return before the All-Star break. This week, Contreras’ left forearm was struck by Mets designated hitter J.D. Martinez during a swing, resulting in a fracture.
It is a gut hit to remove Contreras from a Cardinals lineup that is already having trouble. Both Nolan Arenado and veteran stars Paul Goldschmidt have underperformed this season (the former, in particular), and Tommy Edman’s time on the field and productivity have been severely reduced due to injury, as has Lars Nootbaar’s.
As a team, the Cards are batting just.217/.296/.339. They are tied with the Marlins for 27th place in slugging %. They rank 29th in the majors in home runs (27), runs (127), batting average, and on-base percentage. According to Bernie Miklasz, a prominent St. Louis radio commentator and Cardinals reporter, on X, Goldschmidt, Nolan Gorman, and Dylan Carlson have remarkably managed to go 0-for-48 since the calendar flipped to May.
