Brisbane forward Payne Haas is set to miss Thursday night’s grand final rematch

Despite being named in Kevin Walters’ team on Tuesday, Brisbane have ruled star forward Payne Haas out of Thursday night’s grand final rematch with Penrith.

Walters revealed to the media on Wednesday that Haas will not play against the defending premiers due to knee problems.

The Broncos coach said Haas won’t need surgery on the injury after scans found no problems, but it’s unknown when he’ll be back. This is according to Veronica Eggleton of 10 News.

Moving forward In a finalized lineup under Walters, Xavier Willison has been named to start in place of Haas, with Fletcher Baker most likely to start in the 10.

On Tuesday, only captain Adam Reynolds was listed as out for Brisbane; Jock Madden, a fringe playmaker, took up at halfback to join Ezra Mam in his stead.

As part of the Broncos’ expanded 22-man roster to face Penrith, Madden was joined by Corey Oates, Delouise Hoeter, Jaiyden Hunt, and Tristan Sailor.

Secure In Reynolds’ place, Patrick Carrigan has been named Brisbane’s captain as the Queensland team aims to win consecutive games after defeating South Sydney in Round 2.

After defeating the Eels by eight points last Friday, Penrith is also aiming for their second victory of 2024. If a tie is avoided, they would begin as 1-2 against one of the grand finalists from the previous season.

Brisbane plays the Panthers on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. at BlueBet Stadium.
