The WNBA has garnered more attention in recent weeks, particularly for games starring point guard Caitlin Clark and forward Angel Reese. However, following the Chicago Sky rookie’s blatant foul on the latter, retired NFL quarterback Matt Leinart is now demanding that Reese get a harsher punishment.
Reese gained notoriety before joining the WNBA by inspiring the LSU Tigers to win an NCAA title more than a year ago. Despite the fact that her team lost to Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the most recent NCAA Tournament, Reese’s abilities and play were noticed, and the Chicago Sky chose her as the sixth pick.
Reese has been showcasing her skill on the court since making her professional league debut. The forward has averaged 11.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.9 steals in 10 games, posting consistently strong stats. With a 34 percent field goal percentage and a 71 percent free throw percentage, her shooting accuracy has also been impressive.
The two rookies recently faced off again in a Chicago vs. Indiana game, with Indiana emerging victorious 91-83. Reese struck the Fever player in the head during a drive to the basket during the game, earning her a flagrant foul call. Former NFL quarterback Matt Leinhart commented on X after seeing this play.
“Angel Reese need to be put on leave. Clearly. It’s bad for the game, Leinhart wrote on Twitter.
Reese justified herself after the game, claiming that it was just a basketball play. Caitlin Clark, the top player for the Fever, contributed 23 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists, and 2 blocks in the victory over Chicago.
Where Clark and Reese will lead the WNBA going forward is still unknown. However, the league must be doing something well if someone like Leinart is talking about them to get new people interested in the sport.
