In order to avoid Cup Series vehicles with flat tires beeching and necessitating a drawn-out procedure to get them back to pit road, NASCAR believes it has discovered a solution.
NASCAR Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer said a lifter system will be in place to nurse vehicles back to their teams in an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
Indeed, Sawyer explained, “it’s a system on the back of the car that works around the shock absorber.” As everyone is aware, the NextGen vehicle has been an incredible asset to our racing. We’ve got some incredible racing, in my opinion.
“What followed was that, and we saw at Auto Club (Speedway) two years ago, that this car can’t go anywhere when it has a flat tire, or four flats in particular.
It’s noticeable that sometimes our trucks or an Xfinity car can spin off, resulting in four flat tires, and they won’t be able to limp back to pit road.
We’re hoping that installing or connecting this fast connect will be the solution. that the track service employee only needs to arrive, grab an air hose, if you will, and pump it up to the back tire, which will raise and allow the drivers to return to pit road.
We have to link them up or push them now. We need cars to return to pit road so they can begin their servicing, but we are way too far in the middle, if you will.
According to Sawyer, a valve will be there to supply air to the air cleaners that will lift the rear of the vehicle.
“After they reach pit road, they simply have to hit a valve in the back of the car to make it go back down.”
