The Minnesota Wild’s 2023 NHL Draft first-round selection was a contentious one. Rather than selecting a skillful winger like Gabe Perrault, a fearless forward like Quentin Musty, or a center of gravity like Calum Ritchie, you get the idea—they selected Charlie Stramel, a very huge center.
It was an unexpected pick for Stramel, who had finished his draft year with just 12 points in 33 games for the University of Wisconsin. He actually scored less points in his post-draft season for Wisconsin, finishing with just eight in 34 games. He entered the transfer portal as a result, and he is currently traveling to Michigan State.
In any case, Wild director of amateur scouting Judd Brackett got down with The Athletic and provided a brief overview of their assessment of Stramel and their expectations for the next season. Hopefully, we get to see more from the 6-foot-3 center in a fresh setting.
Regarding Charlie Stramel’s status a year later as a 2023 draft pick Charlie’s next year has me incredibly excited. In college, I’m not the biggest lover of the portal. However, I believe Charlie’s predicament is ideal. Someone with a separate coaching staff commitment. The circumstances and the opportunity both altered. Furthermore, which is fantastic for him, he has the ability to make decisions. Since he would be playing for his old coach, there is instant trust and confidence, which also brings opportunity. I’m giddy.
He needs to go complete it. It’s not all about what he didn’t understand. He ought to go on and complete the task. I’m thrilled for him. He seems a little cocky and eager to see what this year holds. He has encountered certain difficulties early on, whilst most guys encounter them later. There is no straight path to development. This year, he has had both physical and emotional difficulties. Now, how can we get beyond all of those and still end up looking like the guy we imagined? We consider. We’re genuinely looking forward to this year, and we fully back him.
When Brackett expects to see Stramel included on an NHL roster
His physical appearance is the first thing that springs to mind. It’s not simply his power and size; it’s also his mobility. He needs to play hard downhill on the forecheck and be abrasive. Charlie is a point-per-game player, thus statistics have never been important to him. He is harsh though. It’s challenging to play against him. He is a proficient penalty killer. Those are hard to come by, particularly in a 6-foot-3, 225-pound package with his kind of movement. If you go back to last year, he performed admirably at the combine. He’s not merely a large man. His body is fit. Its competitors, its size, and its strength. It’s been harsh. It is a perfect fit for the persona that Guerin has developed in Minnesota.
