Juan Pablo Montoya will return to the NASCAR Cup Series in September at Watkins Glen International, more than ten years after his last series start.
The No. 50 car for 23XI Racing will be driven by Montoya at Watkins Glen, the team announced on Friday. This will be Montoya’s first Cup start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since July 27, 2014.
Five days prior to Montoya’s 49th birthday, on September 15th, USA Network will broadcast the Watkins Glen event.
It will be Montoya’s 256th Cup start at this race. He competed in the series full-time from 2007 to 2013. In 2009, he reached as high as ninth in the points standings after winning two races.
The No. 50 car for 23XI Racing will be competing in its third and final race of the season. Corey Heim and Kamui Kobayashi drove the team’s third vehicle to victory at COTA and Nashville earlier this year. The No. 50 car’s sponsor for each of the three races is Mobil 1.
In a team release, Montoya remarked, “I’m excited to get back in a Cup car and race at Watkins Glen—a track I really enjoy and had the chance to experience earlier in my career.”
It is a privilege to commemorate the Mobil 1 team’s incredible racing history and to get recognition for my efforts to the motorsports industry. It will be extremely significant for me to represent Mobil 1 once more as they commemorate this milestone because they were one of my first sponsors when I began racing. Working with 23XI and seeing what the team is creating excites me as well.
