BREAKING:John Force moved out of neurological intensive care

John Force, an NHRA drag racing legend, was released from neurological intensive care following a 300-mph incident at the Virginia Nationals last month.

John Force Racing announced Friday that the 75-year-old Force has been moved from neurological intensive care to acute neuro care at the hospital where he was airlifted on June 23. He crashed during the first round of Funny Car eliminations, sustaining severe brain damage and a broken sternum.

Force’s car experienced a catastrophic engine failure near the finish line, skidding across the center line and hitting the left concrete guard wall before crashing into the right wall.

Force still has confusion and may move to a long-term TBI and symptom institution, according to the team. Medical staff have helped him speak and walk, but “medical professionals emphasized once again that the journey ahead will be a long and difficult one.”

Force was critically injured in an Ennis, Texas racing crash in 2007 at 58. He won his second race of the season and 157th NHRA event in New Hampshire.
