As Kelechi Iheanacho gets ready to depart Leicester City this summer, Aston Villa is closely monitoring his circumstances, sources have told Football Insider.
The Nigerian international is still being considered by Villa after it was disclosed by Football Insider earlier this month that Monchi had discussions with his representation regarding a possible transfer to Villa Park.
The head of Villa met with the representatives of the Nigerian international in Greece prior to the team’s May 9 Europa League second leg match against Olympiakos.
Iheanacho, 27, has turned down several offers to extend his current contract before it expires at the end of this month, thus it is anticipated that he will depart Leicester on a free agent.
Villa is looking for a new forward to take Jhon Duran’s 20-year-old place, as Chelsea is in advanced negotiations to sign him this summer.
Prior to his expected transfer to Stamford Bridge, Football Insider reported on June 16 that the Colombian international had reached a “agreement in principle” over personal terms.
Jhon Duran might be replaced by Kelechi Iheanacho at Aston Villa
After deciding to stay at Leicester last summer in order to assist the team win promotion, Iheanacho had a difficult season there.
Although the objective was accomplished, the Nigerian’s playing time was drastically cut during the second half of the season.
After many predicted that the forward would be among the Championship’s best scorers, he only managed six goals in 26 games.
Despite this, Villa has expressed interest in a possible deal to sign Iheanacho on a free transfer before his contract expires later this month.
After reporting losses of £119 million in their most recent 2022–2023 accounts, Unai Emery’s team is expected to be nearing the profit and sustainability (PSR) limit, therefore they will be trying to maneuver strategically during the transfer window.
Ross Barkley will join the West Midlands giants on a free transfer from Luton Town after it was announced by Football Insider on May 25 that a “full agreement” was in place to bring him to Villa Park.
However, departures are also anticipated this summer, as Football Insider reported on June 7 that Villa must fund £60 million through player sales after their PSR proposal was turned down by other Premier League teams.
