Arpon Basu makes it possible for Matheson to be part of Necas deal

You have to give in order to get in the National Hockey League.

That holds true for all of the NHL teams, not just the Canadiens.

Nevertheless, Kent Hughes would incur significant costs to remove Martin Necas from North Carolina.

Numerous scenarios have been discussed, and yesterday, Antoine Roussel made headlines for remarks he made, despite his desire to avoid it.

A deal for Necas would involve Cole Caufield, albeit not everyone in town would be in favor of the concept.

In a recent article, Arpon Basu also addressed the Necas file, but he took a somewhat different tack.

As Mathias Brunet suggested two weeks ago, the Athletic reporter thinks the Habs could use Mike Matheson to acquire Necas.

Jaccob Slavin and Dmitry Orlov are already valuable assets for the Hurricanes on the left, but Matheson’s arrival would satisfy a need in Carolina with an attacking defenseman:

Kent Hughes may be able to trade his veteran and acquire a talented young player by taking advantage of the congestion on the blue line.

Necas, who is 25 years old, is in his prime and has the offensive ability to support the Habs for a number of years.

However, Matheson is also relatively young and contributes significantly to the Habs defense.

He is the player who Martin St. Louis uses the most; he is a PP player who has only scored 62 points in 82 games.

And what draws him so much to a team needing quick assistance is his projected salary of $4.875 million over the next two seasons.

Nevertheless, I believe Kent Hughes needs to wait and see what Lane Hutson and the others have in store, even though the Habs are stocked with talented left-handed defensemen.

Most likely, the only left-handed defenseman with any true value is Kaiden Guhle. Arber Xhekaj, Jayden Struble, and Jordan Harris, on the other hand, I believe still have a lot to prove.

Put another way, none of these players seem prepared to play in the top-4 next season, and in my opinion, that is where the issue lies.

But the opportunity to get your hands on a player like Necas, you don’t see that every day.

Kent Hughes will have to scratch his itch, and he’ll have to think seriously about it, even if we know Matheson’s value to Montreal.
