The Canadiens won’t have Alex Burrows back as an assistant coach in 2019.
The 43-year-old consultant for the team will stay with them after leaving the NHL.
On the opening day of the NHL free-agent market, general manager Kent Hughes made that statement during a media meeting at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard on Monday.
Hughes said that Burrows gave up his position as an assistant coach due to personal matters. Burrows has three children with his spouse, Nancy.
The amount of time a coach must devote to their job during the season is quite demanding, according to Hughes. “He lives in Hudson, about an hour’s drive from Montreal, with a young family.”
Hughes announced that Trevor Letowski, Stéphane Robidas, and Éric Raymond, the goaltender coach, will all return to the Canadiens for the next campaign. The general manager went on to say that he will talk to head coach Martin St. Louis to find out if Burrows should be replaced by another assistant coach.
In addition to saying that he will be accommodating to Burrows’s new position as a consultant, Hughes added that Burrows may assist the coaching staff and players in Laval in addition to spending time with the general manager and executive vice-president of hockey operations, Jeff Gorton.

Hughes said that many applicants for the Rocket position met with Eric Crawford, the director of pro scouting, John Sedgwick, the general manager of the team, and Vincent Lecavalier, a special advisor to hockey operations, last weekend during the NHL Draft in Las Vegas.
Hughes stated, “They had some conversations prior to it.” It’s clear that we were a little distracted with free agency and the draft. However, we’ll cut down the list of individuals they’ve questioned, and Jeff and I will conduct a second round of interviews.
