Breaking News:Detroit Lions complete the signing of world-class QB

Veteran quarterback Nate Sudfeld was re-signed by the Detroit Lions, the team announced on Wednesday night. Terms of the contract were not immediately available.

Prior to the Lions making two big acquisitions at quarterback in 2023, Sudfeld was anticipated to serve as the backup quarterback. They signed seasoned quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to be the backup quarterback and coach after selecting Hendon Hooker in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Given that Hooker was on the Non-Football Injury list, Sudfeld came into training camp as the team’s third-string quarterback. The question was whether he would end up practicing with the team or crack the 53-man roster. Sadly, the response was neither since Sudfeld went to injured reserve after tearing his ACL in the season’s final pregame, missing the entire campaign.

Now that Jared Goff is back and Hooker is anticipated to take over as backup quarterback, Sudfeld takes on a crucial position as a valued veteran who can provide feedback. Goff has already discussed the significance of Sudfeld in that capacity.

In August of last year, Goff declared, “Nate’s been awesome.” “His behavior with me on the sidelines has been fantastic. He’s been really helpful, and I’m sure he’s been prepared to play should his number be called.

Sudfeld has played in just six games since joining the league in 2016 as the Washington Commanders’ sixth-round selection. He has completed 25 of 37 throws for 188 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in those games.

The new emergency quarterback rule, which was approved at this week’s owners meetings, is something that should be kept in mind when discussing Sudfeld. Teams can promote an emergency quarterback from the practice squad as many times as necessary during the season, according to the new regulation. That may be Sudfeld’s job for this year.
