In the days following the conclusion of the NCAA dead period later this week, Pat Kelsey, the basketball coach at the University of Louisville, and his staff are anticipated to host a few basketball transfers.
Dante Maddox Jr., a former guard for Toledo, will be one of those transfers.
The 6-foot-2 point guard informed Cardinal Authority that he will travel to Louisville on Friday night and spend the entire Saturday on campus for a campus tour. Maddox had whittled his selection down to Oklahoma, Kansas, TCU, Illinois, Xavier, Michigan, U of L, and Creighton.
Following his visit to the University of Louisiana, Maddox stated he would also like to visit Xavier and Illinois.
“It will happen quickly,” Maddox informed Cardinal Authority. “At some time, I hope to see Michigan and Creighton as well, but everything will go quickly. I promise to dedicate myself to this task this month and finish it by April 21. This won’t take too long, but I want to be sure that I choose the best course of action.”
Maddox, a resident of Chicago Heights, Illinois, is using the portal for the second time. He spent two seasons at Cal State Fullerton, where he began his career, before transferring to Toledo and playing two seasons there. “It’s a totally different process,” Maddox remarked, citing his initial recruitment through the portal.
“It’s a lot different now even from then,” he stated. And since I’m a more well-known guy this time, it’s very different for me.
“The process is a blessing even though it’s not simple. I want to make the best choice because I am extremely fortunate to be in this circumstance.”
Louisville entered the Maddox game as soon as Kelsey was hired, which was two weeks ago. The two had been communicating frequently, and last week, before the NCAA dead period, Kelsey traveled to Toledo to spend some time with Maddox.
Maddox expressed his admiration for Kelsey and his proposal for Louisville.
Maddox remarked, “They have been electric.” “Ascertained. They’ve been enthusiastic and incredibly modest. They have been excellent and so personable. Every chat I’ve had with Brian Kloman and Pat Kelsey has been enjoyable. They are really energizing and have demonstrated a lot of their beliefs to me.
“I’m not even talking about them as coaches, but I really like them as people.”
This past season, Maddox averaged 15.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, earning him a spot on the Second Team All-MAC.
Maddox is a capable perimeter shooter; in the previous campaign, he shot 40.2 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 43.8 percent from the field. Maddox is also a proficient free throw shooter; during the Rockets’ previous campaign, he made 86.2 percent of his efforts from the charity strip. With 1.4 thefts per game on average, Maddox ranked sixth in the MAC for defensive play.
Maddox attended Toledo for two seasons after spending his first two seasons at Cal State Fullerton (2020–2022). Maddox had an erratic starting role at Cal State Fullerton, averaging 21.4 minutes per game, 8.9 points, and 2.4 rebounds per contest.
He is still eligible for one season.
On March 28, Kelsey was brought in to take Kenny Payne’s position, following two seasons with a 12-52 record. Every scholarship player at Louisville used the transfer site.
James Scott and Reyne Smith, transfers from Charleston, as well as James Madison guard Terrence Edwards, have joined the Cardinals.
