The Boston Red Sox, who have been plagued by injuries all season, got good news on Tuesday when Masataka Yoshida was activated off the 10-Day Injured List. Due to a left thumb strain, Yoshida was placed on the IL on May 1st, retroactive to April 29th.
Yoshida’s roster place became available when the team finished designating Garrett Cooper for assignment.
Cooper, a 2022 all-star, was acquired by the Red Sox from the Chicago Cubs on April 27 in exchange for monetary considerations. This is his second DFA of the season. Cooper struck out 22 teams in his 24 games with Boston, almost striking out once a game, while hitting.171 with no home runs and just five RBI. Yoshida was hitting.275 in 24 games prior to his injury, with two home runs and eleven RBI.
When the Boston Red Sox visit Fenway Park on Tuesday night, Yoshida will be starting for the Phillies. Yoshida will bat fifth and serve as Boston’s designated hitter.
