Australian racing prodigy Remy Gardner, son of 1987 500cc World Champion Wayne Gardner, is set to make his highly anticipated MotoGP debut in the 2022 season. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the 23-year-old, who is currently leading the Moto2 World Championship with the Red Bull KTM Ajo team.
Remy Gardner’s journey to MotoGP has been one of determination and talent. At just 23, Gardner has demonstrated impressive skill and consistency, notably winning his first race of the 2021 season at the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello. KTM’s Motorsport Director, Pit Beirer, expressed enthusiasm about Gardner’s promotion. Beirer emphasized that the team is eager to offer Gardner a platform to grow further, citing his impressive speed and potential as key factors in the decision. “It’s a real pleasure for us to bring Remy to MotoGP next season,” Beirer stated. “We knew about his speed and ability for Moto2 and he has confirmed that potential.”
Gardner’s move to MotoGP is particularly significant given his family’s racing legacy. His father, Wayne Gardner, was the first Australian to win the top class of grand prix motorcycling, achieving this feat in 1987. The transition to MotoGP will see Gardner join the Tech3 KTM Factory Racing Team, where he will replace one of the current riders, either Spaniard Iker Lecuona or Italian Danilo Petrucci, who are set to leave at the end of the year. Team principal Herve Poncharal welcomed Gardner’s addition, noting that his arrival would bolster the team and allow them to concentrate fully on their current season. “We believe he will be a strong asset to the KTM MotoGP line-up,” Poncharal said.
