Sadie Mauro, a promising 17-year-old lacrosse player from Massachusetts, tragically lost her life in a boating accident on Cape Cod in July 2023. A student at Dover-Sherborn High School and a standout player for the Mass Elite lacrosse club, Mauro had been preparing for a bright future both athletically and academically. She was committed to playing lacrosse at Gettysburg College, a Division III powerhouse in Pennsylvania, where she was set to continue her career at the collegiate level. Described as a “very coachable” player and a motivated defender/midfielder, Mauro played a key role in her high school team’s back-to-back state championships.
On the evening of Friday, July 21, Mauro was aboard a boat that tragically crashed into a jetty in Sesuit Harbor around 9:30 p.m. The impact ejected her from the vessel, and after an intense search, Coast Guard and local dive teams recovered her body from a nearby beach about 90 minutes later. The crash, which involved six people, left another 17-year-old hospitalized with a head injury. Authorities have not yet determined whether charges will be filed as the investigation into the crash continues.
Mauro’s death has left a deep impact on her community. Dover-Sherborn High School Principal John Smith expressed his sorrow, remembering Sadie as someone who could “light up a room” with her smile and who possessed “a heart of gold and the sweetest spirit.” He praised her adventurous nature, love for the outdoors, and dedication as a student and athlete.
