Are mixed curling team, the “Broomzillas,” made history at Gangwon 2024 by becoming the first African team to compete in curling at the Youth Winter Olympics. Though they did not advance past the round-robin stage, their participation is a landmark moment for winter sports in Africa. The team faced significant challenges, particularly the lack of ice rinks in Nigeria, which forced them to train on synthetic surfaces. Despite these obstacles, the Broomzillas remain optimistic and determined.

Team member Oluwanimifise Wale-Adeogun expressed their strong belief in inspiring future generations, stating, “Anything is possible.” Their journey has not been easy, especially with struggles around securing funding, but their Youth Olympic experience represents a crucial step toward increasing representation for African athletes in winter sports.
